For years now I have used Transmit from Panic.com for all my FTP and server connecting needs on my Mac. Although I tend to minimize the use of third-party apps and use my Mac OS X built-in features as much as possible, sometimes you just need a little extra and this little app does just that.
I like Transmit for several reasons, but the largest one is that it provides me with the usability I need without the extra junk. I hate applications that are packed with useless features and show-off nonsense programming.
Main features of Transmit that I use daily are FTP/SFTP/WebDAV protocols and easy to setup and use Amazon S3 connection. However, I must note that I tend to use native Mac OSX “connect to server” feature for WebDAV more than Transmit application. But for large, prolonged file transferes it seems to work better than the OS native option.

More info on this application here.

To login to FTP servers I prefer to use one of my favorite Mac OS apps, Transmit…. this client is light, quick and has just enough bells and whistles to work pretty much for anything. (including SFTP, Amazon S3, and WebDAV connections)
This tutorial is probably redundant but here it goes anyway…

1.) Download latest version of Transmit from www.panic.com

2.) Follow installation directions included (simply copying it from .dmg to your Applications folder)

3.) Open the application.

4.) Type in the server you are trying to access into the SERVER box (ie: ftp.yourserver.com)

5.) Use the username/password provided (User Name: your username Password: your password)

6.) Click Connect

7.) Simply browse through the directories and drag whatever you would like to download from the right screen into whatever folder you want it at on your computer on the left.

  1. if anyone is hesitant about this application, it’s just as simple and easy as he describes above. try it out, it’s free, doesn’t take up much space and you have nothing to lose. i just downloaded it and within seconds operating transmit…like the snap of my fingers.

andriy, you sweet awesome person you…this is an awesome tutorial you put up. obviously still not as fast as if i’m at the trailer, but it’ll do. this is very useful info because there are those random customers that come in the store with complicated questions and i bet the next one is gonna be about connecting to remote servers. i feel like such a failure when i can’t provide them the exact answers they’re looking for. keep posting helpful tutorials like this and hopefully i’ll become knowledgeable enough or i can just refer them to you!

  2. btw, i liked your previous site layout a little better…but it’s okay, everyone gets bored and needs change once in a while.
