Now that the school is done I am headed out to San Francisco for few weeks. Although there is plenty to be done at home work in San Francisco is a little bit more interesting. Besides working I will be doing some fun stuff as well as just spending some time with the family.

UPDATE: As I’m writing this on my phone we are stuck in lake shore traffic trying to get to the airport. Although weather today is not that bad Chicago rush hour traffic can be just as dreadful.

finally, some updates…
I have been meaning to update my blog for several month now. But due to busy school load doing that was simply impossible. Now semester is over, work is on hold, and i will be doing some much needed cleanup around these parts…

For right now i added some new design and will be cleaning up my archives a little. I also moved from my subdomain (andriy.kharkovyy.com) to the main domain (kharkovyy.com) so now some things will change. For those that use feeds to access my blog you might need to update your feeds with the new url.
I will do some real blog updates soon but for now i’m just happy i was able to change the look…

back from west coast… it’s hot in michigan and we’re going to a conference on orlando which is possibly the last place in the world i would want to visit in august… but hey, seeing some old friends and some more good sushi will make it worth while…

in other news… as a payment for all the hard labor i had to endure over the last week and a half i was given significant financial “assistance” in purchasing my own Canon Rebel XTI … so no more mooching off Vaughan… well at least not for the camera… I also got a couple of lenses for it so I’m pretty excited about venturing off into the world of digital photography…

… recently I’ve been thinking about change….
change as in not for me personally (although that’s a whole another bag of issues) but change in a business sense and what it means for organizations…
Working in a highly bureaucratic environment I’ve seen the positive net effects the change on organizational level can bring, but this being imperfect world, I’ve seen tremendous resistance and frustration that the path to change is lined with…
Lately, at work, we have been working to bring about some new and exciting opportunities for the organization. Of course in order for us to implement those things we have to do some other things differently. One interesting trend that I’ve noticed as a result of people opposing our efforts, is the fact that many people are boycotting implementing new things without even examining the facts. I’m not sure if this sort of behavior is typical, but i would of thought that here, in a academic environment, people would be more prone to do some research before making a decision or contributing critical, non constructive opinions.
I know on some levels I’m guilty of the same thing, I often times have critical opinions. But one thing i consciously do prior to forming those, is examine facts.

I suspect things pertaining to this particular project will work out in the end.
Whether we will be able to implement this project or not will make a difference no doubt. But in the meantime, it seems to me that a much larger (all be it intangible) benefit of this ordeal is to understand that if an organization is to succeed, remaining stagnant is not an option.

Recently I’ve read a book called “Managing the Dynamics of Change” by Jerald M. Jellison. As a result of that and based on my own experiences here (AU) and other work environments I can say one thing. The fundamental challenge of implementing change is helping others through their fears and doubts so they can see the larger picture in the end. Unfortunately I don’t think i have enough patience to do that, not yet anyway….

since i’ve been neglecting to post things on my blog i decided to do some quick updating with more to follow after the weekend

this last few days have been very crazy, lot’s of work mostly… i also moved servers (again) which is why this site was acting weird for some of you the last 2 days. now, seems things are back to normal in the tech land so this thing should work good…
tomorrow Tami and i are leaving for wisconsin academy to attend their alumni weekend and so tonight i’ve been trying to catch up with everything that needs to be done before the weekend, one of those things was this lovely newsletter that will go out to graduating students announcing picnic next week… i though it turned out nice:)

i’ve been soo busy with work stuff that i have not paid much attention to the stock market for these last couple of days… so when i logged on today and saw all this green…..well….it made me happy…in fact looks like in after-hours trading apple inc. stock broke $101.39, so .. thumbs up for apple.

today was full of dramatic and frighteningly somewhat similar events. i’m sure at this point most of you have heard about the shooting that took place this morning at Virginia Tech, where as of ~~3pm~~ 5pm. over 30 33 people have been confirmed dead…

… however dramatic and largely bizarre events were not limited to the east coast, here in the midwest we had our share of crazy...

this morning as i was enjoying my morning cut of delicious petes coffee and anxiously following the news, several emergency vehicles speed by in an unusual, not so pretentious manner… in my office we’re all used to hearing sirens and campus security eagerly in pursuit after frightened grandma as she omits stopping at the corner stop sign… but today seemed different, probably largely due to presence of actual police vehicles; we thought something real was going on… and indeed it did.

according to my sources the guy pictured below decided to go after one of the professors in the theology building, reportedly punching him in the face and attempting to strangle him thereafter.
~~there has been no “official” news release from the university at this point,~~ but as i understand the suspect is in custody and has been transfered to a psyc unit for 48 hours of monitoring. as of yet, ~~there has been no publicly available documents that would indicate charges have been filed~~. Charges are being filed by the prosecutor office.

At approximately 9:15 am today, Seminary professor Russell Burrill was threatened and assaulted in his office at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary by an Andrews student. There was no weapon involved. Office staff heard the struggle and calls for help, went to Russell Burrill’s aid and called Public Safety and the police. Police have the student in custody, and the student is receiving medical attention. Russell Burrill sought medical attention, was released, and has returned to the classroom this afternoon. ~~The student’s name is not being released at this time.~~ Charges ~~are being reviewed~~ have been filed by the prosecutor’s office.

I know this may be the silliest thing to be exited about by lately alumni office has been striving for excellence in terms of serving our world-wide 11k (+) internet-enabled alumni… we have some cool things planned for the near future, but in the mean time something that makes me happy is this:

yes, that’s right it’s a simple newsletter, you probably get these from your credit card company… but as opposed to Chase or Bank of America we do not have unlimited ITS resources and creating things like these has been difficult. While we did not enjoy mass-mailing simple text emails there wasn’t much we could do. However now, with the help of a trusty mac and couple of cans of diet coke we can put out some cool looking newsletters. In the future we hope to put in place something that will be even more impressive but for now, this is what we have to look at, and (surprisingly) even with this, I’m happy.
