my favorite ftp client for mac

For years now I have used Transmit from Panic.com for all my FTP and server connecting needs on my Mac. Although I tend to minimize the use of third-party apps and use my Mac OS X built-in features as much as possible, sometimes you just need a little extra and this little app does just that.
I like Transmit for several reasons, but the largest one is that it provides me with the usability I need without the extra junk. I hate applications that are packed with useless features and show-off nonsense programming.
Main features of Transmit that I use daily are FTP/SFTP/WebDAV protocols and easy to setup and use Amazon S3 connection. However, I must note that I tend to use native Mac OSX “connect to server” feature for WebDAV more than Transmit application. But for large, prolonged file transferes it seems to work better than the OS native option.

To login to FTP servers I prefer to use one of my favorite Mac OS apps, Transmit…. this client is light, quick and has just enough bells and whistles to work pretty much for anything. (including SFTP, Amazon S3, and WebDAV connections)
This tutorial is probably redundant but here it goes anyway…

1.) Download latest version of Transmit from www.panic.com

2.) Follow installation directions included (simply copying it from .dmg to your Applications folder)

3.) Open the application.

4.) Type in the server you are trying to access into the SERVER box (ie: ftp.yourserver.com)

5.) Use the username/password provided (User Name: your username Password: your password)

6.) Click Connect

7.) Simply browse through the directories and drag whatever you would like to download from the right screen into whatever folder you want it at on your computer on the left.

Since I don’t feel like posting anything useful, I figured I should at least share that my website now can be accessed via shiny new iPhone interface.

Since this site doesn’t really see ton’s of traffic, this upgrade is mostly for me, so that I can do entries from my phone without having to load the whole thing. But, if you are one of the “lucky” ones that has an iPhone I’m sure you’ll appreciate the new improved loading speed. Of course, once the 3G iPhone comes out ( as rumored that will happen on the 9th of next month) then you don’t have to worry about this nonsense as you will be able to browse most everything at the new and improved speeds..:

I miss the days when there was only one social networking website I didn’t want to be a part of. Now with myspace, facebook, linkedin and others I find myself logging in to ten different websites just to answer to messages from my friends,…. but if only that was it…
…as the internet becomes cheaper and more importantly, more available across the world, I am once again, presented with forceful “encouragement” to join numerous social networking websites to keep in touch with people that I have largely lost touch with from my past.
Of course as they say..”curiosity killed the cat“, so as a well behaved consumer I login to these websites and create accounts to once again “keep in touch”

Well interestingly enough, the latest social networking website that i have been “encouraged” to join by some relatives from Russia turned out to be anything but, Russian.
Well the website itself is in Russia (i suppose) and it has a Russian name ( www.vkontakte.ru ) but there’s just something on that website that looked entirely too familiar…..

Basically it looks like the guy that owns that site took facebook.com code and translated it in Russian.

Good for him, looks like he is taking advantage of seemingly non existent copyright laws. Even if Facebook wanted to prevent him from blatantly stealing their code, i doubt there is much they can do.

Since i don’t have time to post anything worthwhile today I decided to post bunch of pictures of some celebrities. But then this post turned out much more educational than previously anticipated….

Most of these pictures are taken in or around midnight in respective time zones on New Years. So while looking at useless pictures you can also educate yourself on how these people spent first few minutes of the ~~2007~~ 2008.

my .Mac alternative with 1&1

In all the years i have been using Apple products one product that i always thought Apple did a terrible job with is the .Mac suite. I’m not going to go into all of it’s drawbacks but in short, for 99$ a year that service is a rip off. But i have occasionally fell into buying it simply because i like the way it integrates with the OS X.

Lately i have been looking for a way to utilize my unused several terrabytes of private server space with 1and1. Few days ago i came across MacFUSE, a google code project that allows me to connect to my 1and1 servers via WebDAV connection and simply mount the share on my Mac OS desktop. I love this feature, i hope MacFUSE will become more viable replacement for all of .Mac services. But as for now at least i can utilize my space with 1and1.

If you have 1and1 hosting account (or any other hosting account that supports WebDAV) and a mac you may want to try this. WebDAV is a good way to utilize unused hosting space with your web hosting providers. You may want to note that not all hosting provides have WebDAV enabled.
With 1and1 it starts with business and developer accounts.

Here’s a quick run down on how to set this up on a mac with 1and1.com hosting account (business and up):

1. Create a separate subdomain in your 1and1 control panel and point it to a new folder in your server. (this will work with existing domain names and existing folders but i suspect things will get messy rather quickly)
2. Download and install MacFUSE from here.
3. Restart your Mac
4. Press “GO” then “Connect to Server”
5. Enter: http://yourdomain.com:81
6. Use your MASTER FTP username/password to login. (Using anything other than the username/password that was originally provided by 1and1 will most likely result in an error message)

This way you should be able to utilize the enormous amounts of space that you have available on hosting accounts these days.

I’m sure there are plenty of iPhone reviews out there so i wont bother, but i will say that it beat all of my (rater skeptical) expectation. Brilliant form factor, phenomenal software… apple did it again I’d say..

… yes, it’s everything it was trumped up to be (and more)…
