For years now I have used Transmit from Panic.com for all my FTP and server connecting needs on my Mac. Although I tend to minimize the use of third-party apps and use my Mac OS X built-in features as much as possible, sometimes you just need a little extra and this little app does just that.
I like Transmit for several reasons, but the largest one is that it provides me with the usability I need without the extra junk. I hate applications that are packed with useless features and show-off nonsense programming.
Main features of Transmit that I use daily are FTP/SFTP/WebDAV protocols and easy to setup and use Amazon S3 connection. However, I must note that I tend to use native Mac OSX “connect to server” feature for WebDAV more than Transmit application. But for large, prolonged file transferes it seems to work better than the OS native option.

More info on this application here.

To login to FTP servers I prefer to use one of my favorite Mac OS apps, Transmit…. this client is light, quick and has just enough bells and whistles to work pretty much for anything. (including SFTP, Amazon S3, and WebDAV connections)
This tutorial is probably redundant but here it goes anyway…

1.) Download latest version of Transmit from www.panic.com

2.) Follow installation directions included (simply copying it from .dmg to your Applications folder)

3.) Open the application.

4.) Type in the server you are trying to access into the SERVER box (ie: ftp.yourserver.com)

5.) Use the username/password provided (User Name: your username Password: your password)

6.) Click Connect

7.) Simply browse through the directories and drag whatever you would like to download from the right screen into whatever folder you want it at on your computer on the left.

Here are some screenshots:

Although HP, Dell and some other large computer manufacturers make generally decent products, the fact that you need separate drivers for every single thing on the computer is annoying. For some of the Dell and HP computers you can hardly load windows without searching for all sorts of drivers and patches which very from one device to another.

Recently, I needed to re-install Windows XP on one of our work laptops (HP nx9420). All in all it’s a pretty good machine but it was getting a little sluggish. While trying to boot with Windows XP SP3 disk i noticed that the installation wizard was not detecting the hard drive. After little more research I discovered that the reason why windows installation kept missing the hard drive was because in these laptops hard drives are SATA and Windows XP is not meant to boot SATA drives. So here goes my search for ways to revive this poor computer without calling HP.

This is my solution…

nLite software allows to slipstream SATA (and any other drivers) into a fresh Windows XP install CD which will then boot and recognize the SATA hard drive and anything also you may need during the installation process (video drivers perhaps).

Also I’ve discovered that nLite will allow to create unattended installation CD’s and it will combine the Windows XP keys and all sorts of other good stuff into the disk.
Basically all in all a good little program and super easy to use…

Also, for those that need it, here are extracted nx9420 sata drivers:
nx9420 SATA drivers (17)

Since I don’t feel like posting anything useful, I figured I should at least share that my website now can be accessed via shiny new iPhone interface.

Since this site doesn’t really see ton’s of traffic, this upgrade is mostly for me, so that I can do entries from my phone without having to load the whole thing. But, if you are one of the “lucky” ones that has an iPhone I’m sure you’ll appreciate the new improved loading speed. Of course, once the 3G iPhone comes out ( as rumored that will happen on the 9th of next month) then you don’t have to worry about this nonsense as you will be able to browse most everything at the new and improved speeds..:

I miss the days when there was only one social networking website I didn’t want to be a part of. Now with myspace, facebook, linkedin and others I find myself logging in to ten different websites just to answer to messages from my friends,…. but if only that was it…
…as the internet becomes cheaper and more importantly, more available across the world, I am once again, presented with forceful “encouragement” to join numerous social networking websites to keep in touch with people that I have largely lost touch with from my past.
Of course as they say..”curiosity killed the cat“, so as a well behaved consumer I login to these websites and create accounts to once again “keep in touch”

Well interestingly enough, the latest social networking website that i have been “encouraged” to join by some relatives from Russia turned out to be anything but, Russian.
Well the website itself is in Russia (i suppose) and it has a Russian name ( www.vkontakte.ru ) but there’s just something on that website that looked entirely too familiar…..

Basically it looks like the guy that owns that site took facebook.com code and translated it in Russian.

Good for him, looks like he is taking advantage of seemingly non existent copyright laws. Even if Facebook wanted to prevent him from blatantly stealing their code, i doubt there is much they can do.

It’s almost here, one of the most anticipated technology gatherings world-wide. Over the last several years Macworld has become a technology conference to watch for. Lately even over shadowing the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
It’s here a year ago Steve Jobs made the iPhone announcement, in the years past this event was a launching pad for iPod and new and exciting additions to the Apple’s notebook line up.
I don’t know what to expect and as I have learned in the past rumors tend to be either 100% correct or completely false so it’s rather hard to gauge what might be expected tomorrow based on those….

So, I guess the only thing left is to wait and see. Personally my hope for tomorrow is that Steve Jobs will make my stock go back up passed $200 and actually stay there this time…

In recent days (weeks) I have been rather disappointed with weak tech stock market, particularly the Apple Inc. stock (AAPL). Over the last few days it seems as thought any gains that it might incur throughout the day would drop off by the closing bell. Obviously these stock market fluctuations are normal and most of the Nasdaq’s red ink is to be blamed on factors other than actual companies individual performance. However this morning, I have hope for brighter days ahead, and in this post I hope to define a few reasons.

First, The Macworld conference that starts in San Francisco next week is typically Apple’s annual showcase for its slick new computers. In his keynote speech, Apple CEO Steve Jobs usually races through his presentation, jamming in an abundance of new product demonstrations, leaving just enough time for some celebrity musician like guitarist John Mayer to perform.

It’s curious and telling, then, that Apple chose yesterday to announce two new high end computers the week before Jobs takes the stage. The computers — new, more powerful versions of its Xserve rack server and Mac Pro systems — are Apple’s big iron, the business machines in a heavily consumer-oriented product line.

By announcing the systems yesterday, it’s a strong hint Apple has more than the usual amount of news to cram into Jobs’s Macworld speech next week.

Second, Today the EU closed the antitrust case against Apple and several other major label companies. The EU have been investigating into alleged unfair pricing of the music and seems as thought they did not come up with enough evidence to actually take this thing to court.

Thirdly, although skeptical, I tend to trust people that do the research. And according to my data from all sorts of reputable sources Apple still has ways to go.

So, this (and not the Baleys in my coffee,) is whats going to keep me relatively happy this morning.

In all the years i have been using Apple products one product that i always thought Apple did a terrible job with is the .Mac suite. I’m not going to go into all of it’s drawbacks but in short, for 99$ a year that service is a rip off. But i have occasionally fell into buying it simply because i like the way it integrates with the OS X.

Lately i have been looking for a way to utilize my unused several terrabytes of private server space with 1and1. Few days ago i came across MacFUSE, a google code project that allows me to connect to my 1and1 servers via WebDAV connection and simply mount the share on my Mac OS desktop. I love this feature, i hope MacFUSE will become more viable replacement for all of .Mac services. But as for now at least i can utilize my space with 1and1.

If you have 1and1 hosting account (or any other hosting account that supports WebDAV) and a mac you may want to try this. WebDAV is a good way to utilize unused hosting space with your web hosting providers. You may want to note that not all hosting provides have WebDAV enabled.
With 1and1 it starts with business and developer accounts.

Here’s a quick run down on how to set this up on a mac with 1and1.com hosting account (business and up):

1. Create a separate subdomain in your 1and1 control panel and point it to a new folder in your server. (this will work with existing domain names and existing folders but i suspect things will get messy rather quickly)
2. Download and install MacFUSE from here.
3. Restart your Mac
4. Press “GO” then “Connect to Server”
5. Enter: http://yourdomain.com:81
6. Use your MASTER FTP username/password to login. (Using anything other than the username/password that was originally provided by 1and1 will most likely result in an error message)

This way you should be able to utilize the enormous amounts of space that you have available on hosting accounts these days.

For more on 1and1 hosting WedDAV go here.

everyone’s been talking about this mac virus lately, in fact this news might be a factor in several dips of the stock in the last few days. but i wonder why doesn’t someone actually examine the true validity of this “threat”

first of all this “trojan” comes by way of some porn site… well although there are some statistics with very impressive numbers in light of the fact that mac platform still comprises of only about 12-16% of the world computer systems i’d say that most of the mac users would probably not be affected by this due to simple mathematics.

second, the “trojan” actually asks you to install something… ok, well if you go to a porn site (that’s most likely already inundated with pop ups, advertisement and all sorts of other nonsense) and you are being asked to install something to your computer you probably should NOT do it. and if you do, then perhaps you deserve all that comes after…

in adition, this is only a trojan, which means you have to install it, so once again not really a computer virus… since by definition computer virus is a program “that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user”

In short, mac users have nothing to worry about, and, if you want to make sure you are protected from all sorts of stuff then you are browsing the web i encourage you to deploy OpenDNS on your home router (or computer itself) and use their free phishing and filtering software.

Lately I have been trying to juggle bunch of stuff; school, work, more work… and in the midst of all that I have been trying to find the best way to say on top of my school work (there is definitely enough of it in masters program). Recently I came across this little program called “Schoolhouse”.

Although I should be doing homework and not blogging about it, I figured that those that are in the similar situation might find this helpful, so here i am, sharing…

Schoolhouse is a fairly straight forward, no extra thrills, just enough type of thing… if you use a Mac and are looking for a more efficient way to keep your school stuff organized, try it…

The application can be download from here… Good luck
